Finasteride
Finasteride, marketed as Propecia, helps men with male pattern hair loss to maintain the amount of hair they have and to re-grow some of the hair they’ve lost, resulting in a fuller head of hair and improved self-esteem. During a five year clinical study 65% of the men treated with Propecia had increased hair counts and most of the men treated with Propecia expressed satisfaction with their hair growth.

A receding hairline or a balding spot on the crown of the scalp are typical of male pattern hair loss. Male pattern hair loss is a medical condition in which genetically susceptible men have elevated levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is thought to be responsible for hair loss. Until Propecia, there was little that could be medically done to help combat male pattern hair loss. Propecia works by inhibiting the enzyme primarily responsible for the production of DHT. Through selective interference, Propecia decreases hair loss at the scalp but has little to no impact on body hair.
Propecia does not work for hair loss that is typical to women. In fact, women that are or may become pregnant should not even handle Propecia tablets as serious birth defects may occur. Propecia’s safety has not been established in men younger than 18 or older than 41. Due to fact that Propecia is metabolized in the liver, those with liver function impairments may not be good candidates for Propecia. Make sure your physician is aware of any medical conditions or medications you are currently taking prior to prescribing Propecia.
During clinical trials, very few of the men on Propecia experienced side effects. Overall, fewer than 2% of the men experienced sexual side effects like decreased libido, impotence and decreased semen generation. Luckily, once the men stopped Propecia therapy, the side effects disappeared. Allergic reaction is possible to Propecia. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience swelling of the face or throat; or difficulty breathing. Propecia may also cause breast or pectoral tenderness and testicular pain. If you develop severe pain, pain that won’t go away, or lumps in your breasts/pectoral area or testicles contact your physician for further evaluation.
dosage
1mg of Propecia daily is all it takes to start managing your hair loss but it may take up to three months for any noticeable difference to appear. Do not stop taking Propecia without your physician’s advice as any benefits that are received during Propecia treatment disappears after 12 months off Propecia. Contact your physician if you do not obtain the results you expect or if you have any other questions about your hair loss.
